How to overcome the overwhelm when building a new home

We can all agree that building a home is a stressful undertaking, but does it have to be? What if the overwhelm was reduced to the point where building a home was exciting instead of daunting? Here are some of our top tips on reducing the stress and bringing back the enjoyment of building.

1. Planning

Everything is in the planning! Take your time and get the planning just right. Make sure you have detailed documentation and drawings so that there is not a lot of back and forth between you and the contractors once construction starts. This will save you both money and time down the track.

2. Materials

Make sure you have selected your materials so that each compliment the other and so that the house, as a whole, feels cohesive from space to space. It is also important to provide a clear schedule of material finishes for contractors. Clarity it key here, so no changes need to be made on the go, as this is when the overwhelm can kick in.

3. Budget

Put together a budget so that you can stay on track of spending. Once you can see the full picture financially, you can then value manage by swapping some materials or fixtures out for cheaper alternatives. And don't forget to leave some allowance for the soft furnishings and landscaping.

4. Be brave

Be brave in your selections. Often when we feel overwhelmed we tend to go for what is easiest, in this case what is safe'. If there is something you really want to see in your home, be brave and adventurous. This is where the magic happens.

5. Professional help

Get in a professional to help, even if you have built before, you may find life's demands take over and the house becomes a burden or something you can't manage on your own. Not only can a design professional help you overcome this stress, but they can also create a home that not only meets your expectations but exceeds them.
